How does solar energy work?

2017-05-22 23:50:48 Prostar Solar Read

Our sun is a naturally occurring nuclear reactor. It releases tiny packets of energy called photons, which travel the 93 million miles from the sun to Earth in about eight-and-a-half minutes. Every hour, enough photons impact our planet to theoretically satisfy global energy needs for an entire year. However, solar-generated power currently accounts for just four-tenths of one percent of the total energy consumed in the United States. Solar technology is improving and costs are dropping rapidly, though, so our ability to harness the sun’s abundance of energy is on the rise.

Just how does sunshine become electricity? Here's an overview of the solar energy facts, the process, and the equipment that can help you generate your own clean, more affordable energy.

How does solar energy work

Renewable solar energySolar Panels

The solar panels are made up of photovoltaic (PV) cells, which convert sunlight into direct current (DC) electricity throughout the day.

Renewable solar energyInverter

This device converts the DC electricity generated by the solar panels into the alternating current (AC) electricity.

Renewable solar energyElectrical Panel

The AC electricity is sent from the inverter to your electrical panel to power your lights and appliances with solar energy. The electrical panel is often called a "breaker box."

Renewable solar energyUtility Meter

The utility meter measures your energy use. It actually goes backward when your system generates more power than you immediately need. This excess solar energy offsets the energy you use at night.

Renewable solar energyUtility Grid

Your business is still connected to the grid. You’ll need that power from the utility company at night, but don’t worry. The cost is offset by any excess solar energy you put into the grid during the day.

Renewable solar energyPowerGuide Monitoring System

Our exclusive PowerGuide monitoring system continuously tracks your energy production and ensures that your solar power system is running smoothly. It will even alert our repair crews in the rare event that problems arise.
