What is a power inverter for?

power inverter, or inverter, is an electronic device or circuitry that changes direct current (DC) to alternating current (AC). The input voltage, output voltage and frequency, and overall power handling depend on the design of the specific device or circuitry.

In basic terms, a power inverter is a piece of equipment that can covert a low voltage Direct Current, better known as DC, to standard Alternating Current (AC) power. This conversion of power allows power inverters to operate electrical equipment by plugging directly into a car, truck or boat battery often through a cigarette lighter receptacle or 12V adapter. Power inverters are often lifesavers when it comes to keeping the energy flowing during emergencies, so you can keep using a phone, medical equipment or even a laptop.

The inverter draws its power from a 12 Volt battery (preferably deep-cycle), or several batteries wired in parallel. The battery will need to be recharged as the power is drawn out of it by the inverter. The battery can be recharged by running the automobile motor, or a gas generator, solar panels, or wind. Or you can use a battery charger plugged into an AC outlet to recharge the battery.
